The Complete Hotel Towel Buying Guide: GSM, Cotton Grade & Laundering Durability

Most hotels focus on bedding when upgrading their linen — but towels are the most-touched textile in a guest room. Poor towel quality generates complaints, accelerates replacement costs, and silently damages your property's reputation. This guide covers everything procurement managers need to specify and order the right towels.

What is GSM and Why Does It Matter?

GSM stands for grams per square metre — the weight measurement of a towel's fabric. It is the single most useful number for predicting how a towel will feel and perform in hospitality use.

Higher GSM means more loops per square centimetre, which translates to a denser, softer, more absorbent towel. It also means a heavier product that takes longer to dry — relevant for laundry turnaround time at high-occupancy properties.

GSM Reference Table

Most European hotel mid-market properties operate best in the 450–550 GSM range.

Cotton Grade: Combed, Ring-Spun, Egyptian and Turkish Cotton Compared

Not all cotton is equal. The grade and processing method of cotton fibres affects softness, absorbency, and how the towel holds up across hundreds of wash cycles.

Standard Cotton

Shorter fibres, rougher texture, affordable. Suitable for budget hospitality where replacement frequency is high and cost control is paramount.

Combed Cotton

Combing removes short fibres and impurities, leaving longer, aligned fibres. Noticeably softer than standard cotton with improved durability. A solid choice for mid-market hotels.

Ring-Spun Cotton

Fibres are twisted and thinned during spinning, creating a smoother, stronger yarn. Results in a soft, durable towel that retains its feel across many washes.

Turkish Cotton

Long-staple fibres grown in Turkey's Aegean region. Naturally absorbent, quick-drying and exceptionally durable — the optimal balance for high-turnover hotel laundry. Gets softer with each wash. Our recommendation for European hotels.

Egyptian Cotton

Extra-long staple fibres, extremely soft and luxurious. Highest price point. Best suited to luxury properties where cost-per-use is less critical.

How Many Washes Does a Hotel Towel Survive?

A quality hotel towel should withstand 200–300 wash cycles before noticeable degradation. Budget towels typically last 50–100 cycles before thinning, pilling or losing absorbency.

The key construction factors that affect longevity are:

  • Fibre lengthLonger fibres (Turkish, Egyptian, ring-spun) resist pilling and tearing across repeated mechanical washing.
  • Double-needle hemmingReinforced edges prevent fraying — the most common failure point in hotel towels. Always check for double-needle construction.
  • Loop densityDenser loops (higher GSM) are more resilient to the abrasive action of industrial laundry chemicals and high-temperature cycles.
  • Combed vs. carded yarnCombed yarns are smoother and stronger, resisting pilling better than carded (uncombed) alternatives.

Cost-Per-Use Calculation

A quality towel at €8.00 lasting 250 washes costs €0.032 per use. A budget towel at €3.50 lasting 60 washes costs €0.058 per use — 80% more expensive per wash cycle, plus the higher labour cost of more frequent inventory replacement.

OEKO-TEX Certification: What It Means and Why European Hotels Care

OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 is an independent certification that tests textiles for over 100 harmful substances — including pesticide residues, heavy metals, pH levels and colourants. A certified towel has passed independent laboratory testing confirming it poses no risk to human health.

For European hotels, OEKO-TEX certification matters for two reasons:

  • Guest safety — certified textiles are safe for direct skin contact, relevant for guests with sensitive skin or allergies.
  • ESG reporting — as EU sustainability reporting requirements expand, certified supply chains simplify procurement documentation for hotel chains with corporate sustainability obligations.

All Hotel Wholesale towels are sourced from OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified manufacturers. Certificate numbers are available on request. Read our full sustainability and certification guide.

Towel Types: What to Order and How Many

Standard hotel room configurations require four towel types. The quantities below are based on industry-standard par levels (the number of sets per bed required to allow for laundry turnaround).

Towel Types & Par Level Guide

Towel TypeTypical SizePar Level (per room)GSM Recommendation
Face towel30×30 cm400–500 GSM
Hand towel50×100 cm450–550 GSM
Bath towel70×140 cm500–600 GSM
Bath sheet90×160 cm500–600 GSM
Bath mat50×80 cm700–900 GSM
Pool towel80×160 cm2–4×350–450 GSM (quick-dry)

Par level = sets in room + sets in laundry + buffer stock. A 3× par level allows two days of laundry turnaround.

How to Order Hotel Towels in Bulk

When placing a bulk B2B towel order, you will need to specify: towel type, size, GSM, colour (usually white for easy laundering), quantity per type, and any branding requirements.

At Hotel Wholesale, minimum order quantities start at 50 units per product. For a 50-room hotel running a 3× par level, that means a minimum order of 150 bath towels — well above the minimum threshold. We provide wholesale B2B pricing with pan-European delivery in 10–18 business days.

For white-label towels with custom embroidery or private labels, see our White-Label programme. Samples are available before committing to a full production run.
